When Lillian Davis 31, discovered that she was pregnant, a mix of emotions came rushing in; shock, excitement, anxiety, joy, fear of the unknown. she had so many questions on how her physical image would change; how her body will become big, will she be required to get a bed rest like other women during pregnancy?  What will happen to her when the labour pains come? How will the child look like? But the other pressing question was; what will she put on?
Most women face huge challenges during pregnancy whereby some of them wonder what they’ll be able to wear for the nine months and still look beautiful? There are a lot of misconceptions of what a pregnant woman should wear.
Lillian said that she was trying to hide her belly under big tops, shapeless clothing; this is because she was not confident with how she looked. Upon getting pregnant, and later when the body started experiencing some changes, Lillian felt she needed to hide her bulk body from the public.
“I didn’t know what to wear and I was confused but one of my friends advised me to go and find a pair of trousers with a pouch and some nice tops. Not only that, but I also learnt on how to accessorize my outfit well. I didn’t have many clothes but I managed to wear only appropriate clothing,” speaks Lillian.
Embracing accessories
It is true that during this period one can have a hard time choosing what to wear, but the important thing you should learn is how to play with jewelry, handbags and shoes to inject a much-needed amount of excitement into your pregnancy uniform. Accessories are the best ways to transform the look, not only that, you can still wear them even after pregnancy.
Alice Fortunatus, a 28 year-old civil worker recalls her fashion experience during her pregnancy. She said as her belly grew, she actually thought it was getting easier to dress. With very few items fitting her, she did not spend too much time organising what to wear, she would just grab whatever clothing that fitted her and try to accessorize it so as to spice it up and also made sure her hair was neat.
“I was always trying to wear anything which fit my belly without forgetting wearing a makeup and I always made sure I had a nice hair style. I preferred plated hair with Rasta to make me look beautiful; and of course this hair style lasts longer,” said the mother of two.
She added that every woman must have wigs because they really help. “A woman should have at least two wigs. Having them will help her to change her look any time she wants. My advice to pregnant women is to never look worse during this period, make sure your personality is good, try to love yourself, have confidence and be proud of your pregnancy, by doing so, you will still look attractive to your partner. You should avoid other things that will make you mad such as stress and a bad attitude.
Flora John’s experience
Things were different for Flora John. She was very desperate to find something to make her feel good when she wore it; everything she was trying on was not looking good on her body, therefore she decided to go for deraa.
“I always hate deraa, unfortunately this style became my outfit during pregnancy. Everything I wore was not looking good on me, I decided to go for deraa and a friend of mine advised me not to wear a big deraa. Once in a while I managed to find a deraa that could stretch, this type of deraa at least makes me look beautiful. I also put on a simple top dress and accessorize it with a coat,” noted Flora who is an entrepreneur.
